50 Years of Childpeace Montessori School
What began in 1976 as a small downtown program has grown into Portland’s leading AMI-certified community serving children from 12 months through 8th grade. As we reflect on five decades of milestones, our founding commitment remains unchanged: honoring each child's potential through authentic Montessori education.
1976 – Our Founding: Childpeace Montessori School & Daycare Center is established, beginning its journey with two classrooms at the downtown Portland YWCA.
1986 – Early Expansion: The Toddler Community is added to support children under age three.
1988 – Moving to the Park Blocks: The school relocates to 105 NW Park Avenue and later plays a key role in building the North Park Blocks playground.
2000 – Launching Elementary: A landmark $750,000 gift establishes the school's tuition assistance program and launches the Lower Elementary program. Upper Elementary follows in 2002, with the first 6th-grade graduation celebrated in 2005.
2007 – All Under One Roof: Childpeace purchases its 40,000-square-foot main campus at 1516 NW Thurman Street, realizing the dream of uniting Toddler through Elementary programs under one roof.
2009 – Middle School & Green Space: The adolescent program (Metro Montessori) is founded, expanding education through 8th grade. The dedicated Middle School building on NW Savier Street is added in 2013, followed by the addition of the outdoor green space.
2026 – Celebrating 50 Years: From a small downtown program in 1976 to a comprehensive Toddler through 8th Grade AMI-certified community, Childpeace celebrates five decades of empowering children to reach their full potential.
My kids are 'unleashed' rather than heavily curated. There is a freedom to how they look for and acquire information. It’s the difference between being passively handed something and owning the learning because you figured out the steps yourself.
— Jane Anne Morton, Childpeace Parent
"To have a child here and to have Childpeace at the center... it changed our day-to-day lives. It teaches you community in a real way, from the little things to the big things."
— Jenny Nieh, Childpeace Parent
